Candida, a member of the yeast family, is naturally present in everyone. While harmless under normal conditions with a robust immune system, sufficient stomach acid, and friendly bacteria, candida can lead to infections when certain factors come into play.
Factors such as chronic stress, excessive sugar and alcohol consumption, antibiotics, steroids, and birth control pills can contribute to candida overgrowth. Antibiotics, for instance, disrupt the balance of beneficial flora that normally keeps candida in check, while specific foods provide nourishment for its unchecked proliferation.
Chronic stress creates an environment where candida can overpower gut bacteria, fueled by the release of cortisol. Elevated blood sugar and a weakened immune system provide an ideal breeding ground for candida to thrive. This opportunistic fungus takes advantage of weakened states within the body.
Candida overgrowth results in the production of toxins that harm the intestinal lining, potentially leading to a leaky gut. This condition allows foreign substances, such as food particles and chemicals, to enter the bloodstream. The immune system then attacks the body's own tissues, potentially triggering autoimmune issues based on individual genetic predispositions.
