Exploring the Potential Benefits of Soil-Based Probiotics

November 13, 20231 min read

In the realm of probiotics, an unconventional player emerges: dirt. Some cultures intentionally consume dirt, a practice that dates back centuries. Modern society views this with a degree of skepticism, but it has spurred the creation of Soil-Based Organism (SBO) probiotic supplements.

While evidence supporting the benefits of SBOs is not conclusive, there are indications that they may alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. If traditional probiotics aren't delivering the desired results, SBOs could be worth exploring. Remember, when trying something new, adopt a "low and slow" approach, paying attention to any positive or negative reactions.

The curiosity about consuming dirt, known as geophagia, has roots in theories suggesting it may address nutrient deficiencies or act as a detoxifying agent, particularly clay. Interestingly, geophagia has shown efficacy in treating nausea.

Advocates argue that incorporating soil bacteria into our diets not only adds nutrients but also counters the lack of evolutionary exposure to beneficial bacteria in our increasingly hygienic world. While the scientific scrutiny is ongoing, exploring probiotics from Soil-Based Organisms might offer an alternative if traditional sources fall short.
