Reviewing HoneyBook: Is This CRM Truly Built for Your Growth?

The topic of HoneyBook comes up frequently in my discussions with business owners looking for the right CRM. Because it is such a prominent name in the industry, it is essential to look beyond the marketing and evaluate how the platform actually functions for a scaling business. My goal is to provide unbiased, transparent information that helps you make informed decisions for your long-term success.

To determine if a platform is a true partner in your growth, I evaluate it against five critical criteria. Here is an honest look at how HoneyBook performs.

  1. Per User per Month Pricing: HoneyBook deviates from the traditional "per user" monthly fee by offering flat rates for its tiers. At first glance, this seems like a benefit because it avoids incremental costs for every new seat. However, there is a catch: the Starter and Essentials plans are strictly limited to one and two users, respectively. This means the "flat rate" is only a benefit if you stay very small.

  2. Feature-Based Pricing Tiers: One of the most significant hurdles with HoneyBook is its heavy reliance on feature-based charging. The platform locks essential business tools, such as the scheduler and automation workflows, behind the "Essentials" tier ($59/mo). If you need advanced reporting or the ability to manage multiple companies, you are forced into the "Premium" tier ($129/mo). This model essentially requires you to pay a premium just to access basic functionality that is necessary for professional operations.

  3. Human Technical Support: In terms of accessibility, HoneyBook performs well. They offer human assistance seven days a week through live chat and email. While they utilize an AI bot for initial sorting and triage, you can reach a real person during their standard business hours. For business owners who value knowing a human is available to troubleshoot issues, this is a positive aspect of their service.

  4. Stair-Step Pricing Models: HoneyBook is a textbook example of a stair-step pricing model, which can be detrimental to a growing team. If you grow from two team members to three, you are forced to move from the Essentials plan to the Premium plan. This results in a price jump of $70 per month, an increase of over 100%. This model effectively penalizes small teams the moment they begin to scale, creating a financial barrier to expansion.

  5. Free Trials and Introductory Traps: While HoneyBook offers a transparent 7-day free trial, they frequently employ aggressive introductory promotions, such as offering the service for "$1 per month for 6 months." We view these as "introductory traps." While the initial cost is low, the price increases drastically to the full standard rate once the promotion ends. This often takes users by surprise and locks them into a workflow that suddenly becomes much more expensive than they originally budgeted for.

Final Recommendation Based on this evaluation, I do not recommend HoneyBook for business owners focused on sustainable growth. While the platform provides reliable human support, its reliance on feature-based gating and aggressive stair-step pricing creates significant friction for any business looking to scale efficiently. Furthermore, the use of introductory pricing "traps" is a practice I advise you to avoid in favor of more transparent, predictable partners. Selecting a CRM should empower your growth, not create financial hurdles as you succeed.
