Build a Life You Don't Need a Vacation From
I was reading John Maxwell's book Good Leaders Ask Great Questions recently, and he dropped a Seth Godin quote that stopped me mid-page: "Instead of wondering what your next vacation is, maybe you should set up a life you don't need to escape from."
I had to put the book down for a minute. Because that sentence described my past working life in one uncomfortable breath.
The Sunday Scaries Are a Symptom, Not a Personality Trait
You know the feeling. It's Sunday afternoon, and a small cloud starts forming over your head. Monday is coming. You start counting down to Friday before the week has even begun. You book vacations not because you're excited about the destination, but because you desperately need an exit door.
I lived there for years. Disconnected from my work, watching the clock, mentally drafting my resignation letter during boring meetings I'll never get back. I wasn't lazy. I wasn't unmotivated. I was just in the wrong seat on the wrong bus, and no amount of PTO was going to fix that.
What I actually wanted was almost embarrassingly simple: work that didn't feel like work. A job I'd show up for even if the paycheck wasn't part of the deal (though let's be honest, the paycheck still needs to show up too).
Finding the Work That Finds You
Here's the good news. That kind of work exists, and it's not reserved for lottery winners or people born into the "right" family business. I found mine as a relationship-driven CRM consultant, which is a fancy way of saying I help business owners use technology to strengthen actual human relationships.
My motto is simple: use CRMs to strengthen human connection in the digital age.
I know, I know. "CRM" is not a phrase that gets anyone's heart racing at a dinner party. But stick with me, because the magic isn't in the software. It's in what the software gives back to you.
Technology's Real Job Is to Buy You Back Your Humanity
Here's the part most people miss about business technology. A good CRM doesn't just organize your contacts or automate your follow ups. It gives you your time back. And what you do with that reclaimed time is where the real competitive advantage lives.
When the busywork gets handled by your systems, you get to spend more time actually engaging with your customers, your prospects, and your business partners. You get to be more human, more present, more yourself.
And that, my friend, is your unfair advantage. Anyone can copy your pricing. Anyone can copy your services. Nobody can copy you. Your personality, your care, your way of making people feel seen, that's the one thing your competitors can never replicate. The more time technology frees up for you to show that side of yourself, the more sustainably your business grows. Not because you hacked a funnel, but because people genuinely like doing business with people.
One Life, One Network, Make It Count
Whether you're building your own company or climbing the ladder inside someone else's, I hope you find work that actually lines up with your values. Work that lets you show up as the best version of yourself, not a watered down, clock watching version who's just here for the health insurance.
Because here's the truth nobody puts on a motivational poster: you only get one life. And that life ripples outward into everyone in your network, your customers, your prospects, your coworkers, your friends, your family. When you find real purpose in your work, something shifts internally. You find a kind of quiet peace. And that peace doesn't stay contained to you. Everyone around you benefits from it too.
So maybe the goal isn't to plan a better vacation. Maybe it's to build a life, and a career, so aligned with who you are that you stop needing an escape hatch altogether.
