How to Get Better Referrals by Defining Your Ideal Client by Values, Not Industry

How to Get Better Referrals by Defining Your Ideal Client by Values, Not Industry

October 20, 2026•5 min read

A recent conversation with a strategic partner reminded me of a business lesson that is surprisingly simple yet often overlooked.

They asked a thoughtful question: Who is your favorite type of client to work with right now? At first glance, that question seems to be about industries, niches, or service offerings. Most people expect an answer like healthcare, real estate, accounting, or professional services.

My answer was different.

While I currently enjoy working with organizations such as a physical therapy clinic and a bookkeeping firm, the industry itself is not what determines whether a client relationship becomes successful. What matters far more are the values and mindset of the people involved.

That exchange inspired an important realization worth sharing with business owners: the best business relationships are built on alignment, not industry.

The Referral Mistake Many Business Owners Make

When people refer business, they often focus on external characteristics.

They ask questions like:

  • What industry do you serve?

  • How many employees do they have?

  • How much revenue do they generate?

  • What software are they using?

Those details can be helpful, but they rarely predict whether a partnership will be successful. The reality is that two companies in the same industry can be completely different clients. One may embrace collaboration, communicate clearly, and invest in long term growth. The other may resist change, avoid communication, and expect miracles without participating in the process. On paper they look similar. In practice they are worlds apart. That is why the most valuable referrals often come from understanding values before demographics.

The Two Traits That Matter Most

Over the years, I have discovered that my most enjoyable and successful client relationships usually share two characteristics.

They Are Relationship Driven

These business owners understand that success is built through genuine human connection. They are not looking for quick wins or shortcuts. They invest time in their clients, partners, team members, and professional network because they understand that trust compounds over time.

The funny thing about relationship driven businesses is that they often appear slower on the surface. They spend time nurturing relationships. They check in with people. They make introductions. They help others without immediately expecting something in return.

Yet these are frequently the businesses that create the strongest reputations and most consistent growth. What appears slow today often becomes sustainable tomorrow.

They Value Collaboration

The best clients do not hire experts to disappear. They hire experts to think alongside them. These business owners know their company better than anyone. They understand the nuances, challenges, opportunities, and customer experiences that make their business unique.

Instead of seeking a one size fits all solution, they want a strategic conversation. They recognize that the best outcomes come when both parties contribute their expertise. The client brings deep business knowledge. The consultant brings specialized experience. Together they create something far better than either could have developed alone.

Why Values Create Better Results

Imagine hiring a personal trainer. If you show up consistently, communicate openly, and follow through on recommendations, your chances of success increase dramatically. If you skip appointments, ignore advice, and refuse to participate, even the world's best trainer will struggle to help.

Business partnerships work the same way. The quality of the outcome is often connected to the quality of the collaboration. When values align, communication becomes easier. Expectations become clearer. Challenges become opportunities to solve together rather than problems to argue about.

The result is more progress, less frustration, and stronger long term results.

A Better Way to Define Your Ideal Client

Many business owners spend countless hours trying to identify their ideal customer profile. That exercise has value, but it often misses the deeper question:

Who do you enjoy building with?

Consider creating your ideal client profile around values instead of just demographics.

Ask yourself:

  • What attitudes make client relationships enjoyable?

  • Which clients generate the best outcomes?

  • What behaviors lead to successful projects?

  • Which values create mutual trust and respect?

You may discover that your favorite clients come from several industries but share the same mindset. That insight can transform your marketing, networking, and referral strategy.

Help Others Refer You More Effectively

One of the greatest gifts a strategic partner can offer is a thoughtful referral. But referrals become much easier when people understand who you serve beyond job titles and industries.

Instead of saying:

"I work with healthcare companies."

Try saying:

"I work best with business owners who value relationships, collaboration, and long term growth." That's who I like working with by the way :)

That description gives people something much more meaningful to look for. It helps them recognize opportunities that might otherwise be missed. And it increases the likelihood that the referral will be a strong fit for everyone involved.

Final Thoughts

Business growth is often portrayed as a numbers game. More leads. More meetings. More proposals. More sales.

But many of the best opportunities come from something far less complicated. They come from finding people whose values align with your own. Industries matter, services matter, processes matter. Yet relationships remain the foundation underneath all of them.

When you identify the values that make partnerships successful, you stop chasing every opportunity and start attracting the right ones. And that makes business a lot more enjoyable.
