How I Network Smarter Without Paying Alignable a Dime
Networking platforms love to promise “the next big thing,” and Alignable is no exception. Recently, I watched a professional give a demo showcasing the paid version of Alignable. She walked through the referral feature, explained how it wasn’t available on the free plan, and showed how Alignable’s AI automatically generates intro messages. She even said she usually edits the AI message, which I agreed with. That part made sense.
Everything else had me thinking, “I already do this better in my CRM.”
Let me explain why.
The Paywall Problem: Why I Don’t Pay for Features I Already Built
Alignable puts its referral functionality behind a paywall. Fair enough. Platforms need revenue.
But here’s the thing. I built my Networking Success Framework inside my CRM back in 2019. It already does everything Alignable’s paid version does, and I’ve spent years refining it. I even sell it to others now for a one time fee. See we are all sell are solutions.
So paying Alignable subscription fee for a feature I already own would be like renting a bicycle when I already have a custom-built one in my garage.
Some people don’t have my framework, so I understand why they’d pay for Alignable. I’m simply not one of those people.
The Data Ownership Trap: Why Alignable’s Contacts Don’t Belong to You
This is the part most people never think about.
All the contact data you accumulate on Alignable belongs to Alignable. Not you.
Let that sink in.
Alignable can suspend you, ban you, or change its pricing. If they do, you lose access to every connection you spent months or years building. You cannot export your contacts. You cannot download your network. You cannot take your data with you.
That makes Alignable’s contact list third‑party platform data, not first‑party CRM data.
In a CRM, you own your data. You can export it. You can move it. You can back it up. You can take it with you if you switch platforms.
On Alignable, your data lives inside their ecosystem. They control access. They control the rules. They control the paywalls.
If your account disappears, your network disappears with it.
To me, that feels like building a house on land someone else owns. You can decorate it, improve it, and invest in it, but if the landlord changes their mind, you’re out.
Why I Don’t Build My Network on Borrowed Land
If I’m going to invest time, energy, and strategy into growing my network, I want that effort to live somewhere safe. Somewhere portable. Somewhere I control.
That place is my CRM.
I can export my data anytime. I can move it. I can back it up. I can take my ball and go home whenever I want, knowing the ball is mine.
Alignable? You’re renting access. And your data is the rent.
I don’t like being held hostage. Not even metaphorically. And definitely not at gunpoint. Kidding, but you get the idea.
My Free Workaround for Alignable’s Connection Limits
Alignable gives free users only five connection requests per month. They do this to push you toward paid plans.
I’ve never paid for Alignable. Not once. And I’ve never needed to.
Here’s my rinse‑and‑repeat workaround that has helped me grow my network and revenue for years:
The 7‑Minute Smart Connect Strategy
During a 7‑minute Smart Connect, I look at the person’s info under their video where I'm talking to them live: company name, website, city, state. Then I find them on LinkedIn in real time.
I tell them, “I really enjoyed talking with you. I’d love to stay connected and explore how we can support each other.”
If they say they’re out of Alignable connection requests, I smile and say, “No worries. I just connected with you on LinkedIn.”
They usually respond with, “Wow, you’re fast.”
I reply, “It was worth the effort. I want to learn more about you so I can refer you in the future.”
They accept my LinkedIn request. I send my CRM scheduler. They book a meeting. We build a relationship. We create mutual referrals.
I repeat this process every time I attend Alignable events. It works beautifully. And it’s free.
Why My CRM Makes Networking Easier, Stronger, and More Human
Here’s the secret to making networking meetings successful:
You must remember people.
Not just their name. Their bio. Their target market. Their strategic partners. The pain points they solve. Their story.
That’s why my networking partners save their professional bio directly into my CRM. When they do, I get notified. I can search thousands of contacts in my CRM. I can make thoughtful introductions. I can support them in ways that feel personal and intentional.
And because I provide real value, people reciprocate. They introduce me to others. They help me grow. We build partnerships that actually matter.
This is how networking should feel.
First‑Party Data Is Freedom. Third‑Party Data Is Dependency.
Every contact in my CRM belongs to me. It’s first‑party data. I earned it. I own it.
If I ever leave my CRM, I can export everything and take it with me.
Alignable doesn’t give you that option. You can’t download your contact list. You can’t take your network with you. You can’t protect your investment.
To me, that feels like being shackled in a digital prison where your data is held hostage and you have to pay to play.
I prefer freedom.
I’m Open to Both Sides. Change My Mind.
Some people love Alignable. Some people swear by it. And that’s perfectly fine. We all have different use cases.
I’m simply on the side that says:
“I will never pay for Alignable. Change my mind.”
If you disagree, I genuinely want to hear your perspective. If you agree, I’d love to hear that too.
