The Power of Planning: Why Advance Notice Wins in Networking

January 29, 20263 min read

We live in a world that often feels like it's running on fast forward. Calendars are packed, inboxes are overflowing, and the to-do list seems to multiply overnight. For many of us, this isn't just a feeling, it's a daily reality. Especially when things are booming, like for me with multiple clients I am grateful for, on top of juggling existing projects and nonstop prospect demos, managing time becomes an art form.

This packed schedule brings me to a topic that's crucial for effective professional networking: the often-underestimated power of advance notice for events.

Why a Heads-Up Isn't Just Nice, It's Essential

Think of your professional network as a collection of valuable relationships, each built on mutual respect and understanding. When it comes to inviting someone to an event or asking them to promote it to their own network, the timing of your request speaks volumes. A sudden, last-minute invitation can feel less like an opportunity and more like an imposition, especially to someone whose days are meticulously planned.

Providing ample advance notice isn't just good manners; it's strategic. It allows your potential attendees or promotional partners to genuinely consider the request, check their availability, and integrate it into their already busy schedules. This thoughtfulness dramatically increases the chances of a positive response and stronger support.

My Policy: Respecting Boundaries and Maximizing Impact

Let's be candid. With my current workload balancing new clients, existing projects, and a steady stream of demos, my capacity for last-minute additions is, frankly, nonexistent. To put it simply, if an event invitation or a request to promote something arrives at the eleventh hour, my answer will always, regrettably, be "no."

This isn't a reflection of the event's value or my interest in supporting my network. Instead, it's a necessary boundary I've established to ensure I can deliver the best possible service to my clients and manage my professional commitments effectively. It's about honoring my time, and by extension, honoring the time and effort I put into every engagement.

The Networking Secret Sauce: Thoughtfulness and Planning

True professional networking thrives on thoughtfulness and mutual respect. When you reach out with plenty of time to spare, you're not just sending an invitation; you're sending a message that you value the other person's schedule and understand their professional demands. You're giving them the space to say "yes" wholeheartedly, without feeling rushed or pressured.

This approach builds stronger relationships. It shows that you're a considerate partner who understands the give and take of professional collaboration. If you want strong attendance at your events or genuine support in promoting them, then planning ahead and communicating early are your best tools. It ensures that when someone like me, who is stretched thin but eager to help, sees your request, they actually have the bandwidth to do so effectively.

In essence, a little planning goes a long way. It ensures that opportunities aren't missed due to timing, and that valuable connections are nurtured through respectful engagement.
